    Electrical Construction Apprenticeship

    Apprentices in our five year Electrical Construction Apprenticeship Program obtain at least 8000 hours of compensated on-the-job training and at least 900 hours of related classroom training. Upon completion, the apprentice graduates to Inside Journeyman Wireman status and is fully qualified to perform the work of the trade.

    Telecommunications Apprenticeship

    Apprentices in our four year Telecommunications Apprenticeship Program will obtain at least 8000 hours of on-the-job experience and at least 640 hours of related classroom training. Upon completion, the apprentice graduates to Installer Technician status and is fully qualified to perform the work of the trade.

    A Telecommunications Installer Technician installs the network of low voltage cabling that is used for video, voice and data or other low voltage signaling.

    While most installations are in buildings that are partially or fully enclosed to protect from sun, wind and rain; these installations are often installed before air conditioning, heat or permanent light fixtures have been installed in the buildings. Many jobs, however, are in existing buildings or offices; and some work may be outside under varying weather conditions.

    Backbone voice and data cables are routed between the entrance facility, where communications signals enter a building: to equipment rooms and telephone rooms. Voice and data horizontal cables are routed between telephone rooms or equipment rooms and individual workstations throughout the building.

    Equipment rooms often contain energized equipment such as hubs, file servers or telephone switches. These devices are configured and connected to the communications network that serves the building, and must not be interrupted as a result of work performed by unqualified workers or those only partially trained.

    The Installer Technician installs voice and data outlets at workstations. In addition, they install punch down blocks and cross connects in telephone rooms. These may be wall mounted or rack mounted, and must be grouped and identified according to specific installation standards.

    Whether the work is in new construction or in existing office or manufacturing space, the IBEW-NECA craftsman takes pride in the work he or she performs.

    We train to TIA/EIA and other industry Standards. The NJATC also partners with the major manufacturers in the video, voice and data industry to assure training in the latest technologies including training for manufacturers warranted installs.

    Job Description

    Many of the work processes of the Installer Technician are listed below. There are many systems that utilize low voltage video, voice or data signals. Not all Installer Technicians work on all systems. However, properly trained Installer Technicians can work on a variety of types of systems, including systems for video, voice and data.

    Our curriculum was designed by the National JATC and is taught at JATC’s all over the country. Through an Articulation Agreement with Northwest State Community College, apprentices are awarded college credit for completion of our curriculum. Click on the Northwest State Credit Information page for more information.  

    Apprentices are required to pay a yearly administration fee.  The current administration fee for each year is $500.00. The administration fee is due before the start of each school year, usually around September 1st. The JATC provides books and any other materials necessary for classroom training. Apprentices must attend every class and maintain a minimum test average of 75%.

    Classroom Standards

    Related classroom training is held two nights per week, four hours each night with some Saturday classes involved. Classroom training generally runs September through May, for a minimum of 900 hours in five years. 

    Classroom training is held at the Cincinnati Electrical Training Center, 5455 Glenway Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45238. Apprentices must attend every class and maintain a minimum test average of 75%.

           Licenses, Certifications and Special Training Received:

    ·     CPR Certification-Years 1-5

    ·     First Aid Training—Year 1 & 4

    ·     OSHA 10 Hour Certification - Year 1

    ·     OSHA 30 Hour Certification - Year 4 or 5

    ·     Ohio State Fire Alarm License—Year 4 or 5

    ·     Kentucky License—Year 5

     

    Telecommunications Apprenticeship

    Related classroom training is held two nights per week, four hours each night with some Saturday classes involved. Classroom training generally runs September through May, for a minimum of 640 hours in four years. Classroom training is currently held at the JATC with some additional classes held at Gateway Technical and Community College in Northern Kentucky.

    An especially important element of apprenticeship is On-the-Job training. Apprentices are placed to work with one of our 109 electrical contractors. These training assignments can be located anywhere within Local 212’s jurisdiction. This includes Hamilton, Clermont or Brown counties in Ohio, Dearborn, Switzerland or Ohio counties in Indiana and Boone, Bracken, Campbell, Kenton Gallatin, Grant or Pendleton counties in Kentucky. For this reason it is necessary for all apprentices to have reliable transportation.

    The regular workday is 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, with 1/2 hour for lunch, but may vary depending on contractor bids. Apprentices are required to work every day and to be on time and ready to start work at the assigned time.

    On-the-Job training is what sets our programs apart from a traditional education. Because of On-the-Job training, you are able to “Earn While You Learn”! Apprentices wages and benefits are based on percentages of journeymen or installer technicians rates (see wage schedules for current wage and benefit information). As you gain more experience, your wages and benefits grow! And by the time you finish your apprenticeship, you will have years of actual experience under your belt, along with the knowledge you need to apply that experience.
